Day of Caring set for Friday

UNITED WAY HOLDS DAY OF CARING: The 16th annual United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley Day of Caring, sponsored by Covelli Enterprises, will take place on Friday.

The United Way Day of Caring is a communitywide day of hands-on volunteering. Employees of area companies participate by completing tasks, odd jobs, and organizing activities for local nonprofit organizations. Student, church and other community groups as well as families are encouraged to participate. Projects may consist of painting, construction, landscaping, cleaning, or home repairs.

The Day of Caring not only helps local agencies to complete much-needed tasks, but it provides volunteers with an opportunity to see first-hand how these agencies work to meet the needs of the community. The day is also the official start of the 2013 United Way campaign.

Those interested in learning more about the Day of Caring, or to volunteer, call 330-746-8494.

AUTISM GROUP MEETS: I.V.A.N. (Inspirational Voices 4 Autism Needs), a local support group for families on the Autism spectrum, is held bi-weekly from 7 to 8 p.m. every other Wednesday in the multipurpose room at Believers Christian Church on Schenely Ave, Howland. A light snack is provided with the meeting, and child care is provided to those who chose to utilize it.

For information, call 330-980-2080.

EXHIBITS TO EXPAND: OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology has a 3,000-square-foot expansion that will include a new exhibit area dedicated to making things, and a second classroom. A grant award of $25,000 from the Youngstown Foundation made the project possible.

After two years of operation, more than 79,000 explorers, 5,000 members, 474 educational field trips and 235 birthday celebrations have visited OH WOW!’s state-of-the-art facility in downtown Youngstown. The expansion is being developed in collaboration with OH WOW!’s educational and manufacturing partners.

The Center is also working on website remodeling, bringing in health and wellness traveling exhibitions, and a new Energy WOW! Zone on the main exhibit floor. For information, call 330-744-5914.

POLICE PROGRAM OFFERED: The Citizen’s Police Awareness Academy Training will begin its third year starting Sept. 11. Classes are held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and run for eight consecutive weeks.
