Gardens to be open on Sept. 1

OPEN GARDENS PLANNED: The 17th annual Rodney and Kay Toth’s open gardens will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 1 at 5637 W. Liberty St. Hubbard. Gardens include the Mexican Fiesta Garden, with many specialty plants such as Mexican petunias. There are several major gardens.

Special guests will be singing entertainment by Monica Toth Baker at 2 p.m., John Schinker from the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown with mums and Alice Lang with decorative gourd art. Admission and parking are free.

ANNUAL WALK PLANNED: The Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Ohio Chapter will host the 16th annual Cleveland Walk to End Lupus at the Brecksville Reservation, Oak Grove Pavilion in Brecksville, at 1 p.m. Sept. 28. A 5K walk concludes the event.

To register, visit www.LupusGreaterOhio.org. Participants can also create a personal fundraising page on the Walk website to raise money and recruit new teams.

HIGH HOLIDAY COLLECTION: Temple El Emeth in Liberty will hold a high holidays food drive through Sept. 30 for Second Harvest Food Bank. Non-perishable items and toilerty items can be brought to the main lobby of the temple where there are yellow barrels The event is designed to help feed those in need in the community.

UNITED WAY UNVEILS PROGRAMS: The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley has partnered with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and The Brilex Group of Companies on an innovative pre-school learning tool.

A school year calendar featuring educational tips and topics is provided to the 600 students and their families participating in the United Way’s Success By 6 program. By using the calendar as a guide, parents become partners by supporting the work performed by a child’s teacher.

MYCAP OFFERS PROGRAM: The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership will hold an informational session from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday for the Workforce Development Program that will begin on Sept. 16. The job training classes are free and will be held at MYCAP’s office, 1325 Fifth Ave., Youngstown.
