WARREN – A summer tutoring program for children is focusing on helping youth retain what they learned from the past school year over the summer months.

The program is being offered Tuesday to Thursday at TCAP Building, Palmyra Road, through Aug. 9.

Santonia McCoy-Williams, an instructor, said the program is a collaboration between TCAP and NEO-Multicultural arts for children in preschool to 12th grade.

She said the goal is to keep the children “brushed up” on all subject areas since the school year ended through tutoring. There is also a focus on building self esteem.

McCoy-Williams said there is always a concern that children will forget some of what they learned over the summer.

There are volunteer staff trained in different subject areas helping with test taking and study skills.

McCoy-Williams said the children attending were given a pre-test at their grade level at the beginning which will be compared with a post test to be given later to see how the children have progressed over the course of he program.

Van Nelson, a volunteer, said it is important that children retain as much as they can since too often some knowledge is lost.

“We want to keep them at the level of learning that they left the last school year with,” he said.

Nelson said the staff is to be commended for volunteering for the program.

McCoy-Williams said there are educational learning games children take part in.

She said the finale in August will be a program for parents where the children are in a talent show and also share what they have learned and done.

Cedric Haynes, 6, said he likes learning on the computers.

A breakfast and lunch are served.
