Coca-Cola swap meet planned

COCA-COLA MEMORABILIA TO BE SHOWN: The Ohio Western Reserve Chapter of the Coca-Cola Collectors will hold its 26th annual swap meet and advertising memorabilia show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m Aug. 4 at Cortland Masonic Lodge 529, 3263 Everett Hull Road, Cortland. Admission is free.

SPEAKER PART OF SERIES: Universal Cafe at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown will present ”The Great Depression: A Diary by Daniel Roth” who tells of his father, Benjamin F. Roth, an Army officer from World War I, who grew up in Youngstown.

The program is 7 p.m. Monday at the church.

TEDDY BEARS TO HELP HOSPIALIZED CHILDREN: Quaker Steak and Lube is collecting teddy bears to be donated to Akron Children’s Hospital and given to the children. Donations will be accepted until Sept. 15.

The teddy bears will be delivered Sept. 15 to hospital during the teddy bear bike run. For more information or to locate a participating Quaker Steak and Lube, visit www.quakersteakandlube.com.

CAMP REGISTRATION: The Youngstown Jewish Community Center is registering children for the summer camp for children in grades first to eighth. Camp JCC is 10 weeks of summer activity offered in one week affordable sessions.

FAMILY REUNION PLANNED: The 136th annual Chalker Norton Viets family reunion is being planned for noon Aug. 4 at the American Legion Hall, 3145 Warren Burton Road, Southington.

There will be family games, craft table for the children and cornhole games. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share and their own table service. Beverages will be provided.

The first family reunion was Sept. 12, 1878, at the homestead of James and Mercy Chalker, hosted by their son. The first pioneers were David Viets, Luke and Hannah Norton Viets, James and Mercy Norton Chalker and arrived in the area of Southington in June 1805.

The theme this year is mix and match, with a prize for a child and an adult. Tours of the Chalker High School building will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Attendees are asked to bring dates of marriages, births, deaths and divorces to be added to the genealogy records. All descendants are to invited to the reunion. For information, call 330-399-5047.

HELPING TO BEAT THE HEAT: Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership is helping local residents beat the heat this summer with the summer crisis program, which runs through Aug. 31.

MYCAP and the Ohio Development Services Agency will help income-eligible Mahoning County residents purchase an air conditioner or fan, and / or assist in the payment of an electric bill, with the Home Energy Assistance Program HEAP Summer Crisis Program. The program provides assistance to low-income households with an elderly member, 60 or older.

Residents must call MYCAP to make an appointment at the Youngstown office toll free at 1-866-223-1125. Additional information may also be found at www.energyhelp.ohio.gov, or by calling toll-free at 800-282-0880.

PROGRAM FOR HEADSTART: The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership will have new enrollment and re-enrollment for their Head Start / Early Head Start program from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Friday through Aug. 9. There will be nine Head Start / Early Head Start sites throughout Mahoning County.

On Friday, enrollment will take place at the Renaissance Learning Center, 345 Oak Hill, Youngstown, and the final session is Aug. 9 at Westchester Learning Center, 122 Westchester Drive, Austintown. For more information, call MYCAP in Youngstown at 330-747-7921, Ext. 1104 or 1108.

NEW DEGREE OFFERED: Kent State University College of Public Health is offering a Master in Public Health degree in health policy and management, leadership. The graduate degree is for working health professionals who want advanced skills in organizational change and leadership development.
