Soap Box Derby set for Saturday

SOAP BOX DERBY: The Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center, 520 W. Main St., Cortland. Drivers ages 8 to 17 from Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana Counties will compete in three divisions. Winners continue on to the International Soap Box Derby held in July in Akron. Rain date is Sunday.

TOWNSHIP OFFERS YOUTH PROGRAMS: Howland Township Summer Youth Sports / Recreation Program will offer various camps for children. Monday to June 14 will be fishing at the township park and painting and drawing at the middle school.

GARDEN PLOTS AVAILABLE: The Urban Community Victory Garden, sponsored by the Community Concerned Citizens II, has made additional plots available for the waiting list and is announcing there are a few more available for interested persons. The garden is located on York Ave at Jackson St. S.W.

TOWNSHIP COLLECTING TIRES: Howland Township is holding a scrap tire drop-off for township residents only from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to June 14 at the Public Works Department, 3600 North River Road. Residents may drop off a maximum of eight passenger tires only, with no rims.

JUNETEENTH SEEKS PARTICIPANTS: The committee planning this year’s Juneteenth celebration is looking for participants and cornhole players. The event is being planned for June 15 at Perkins Park pavilion. Call 330-719-3139.

GROUP HOSTS RIDE: The Western Reserve Fish and Game will sponsor a Shooters and Scooters ride starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at 1058 W. Third St. Niles. The event will include motorcycles, door prizes, raffles, 50-50 and darts.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL SET: First Presbyterian Church of Girard, 890 Churchill Road, will hold a strawberry festival from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m Sunday on the church grounds.

COLLECTION OFFERED: Warren Township will hold a tire collection from 8 a.m to noon Saturday at the township road department, 3765 W. Market St., Leavittsburg. There is a limit of eight tires per resident per household. No large commercial truck tires will be accepted.

SWIM LESSONS OFFERED: Swimming lessons are being offered at the Warren YMCA in the evening Monday to Thursday. Sign up by Monday. Classes being offered range from babies to adults.
