Plans under way for camp
WARREN – Learning to play various musical instruments and performing on stage while gaining confidence are what’s in store for participants who attend the upcoming Girlz Rock Camp!
Terri Morgan, event coordinator, said this is the third year for the alternative music camp for girls and young women ages 7 to 17. It will be held the week of July 8 to 14 at the STEAM Academy, 261 Elm Road, Warren.
Girlz Rock Camp aims to create a supportive, inclusive and creative space for girls to develop self confidence, build community involvement and perform locally at the Warren amphitheater.
Girlz Voices Inc. has teamed up with the STEAM Academy and the YWCA of Warren to offer the program.
A volunteer workshop symposium will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 29 at the Steam Academy to prepare volunteers and participants for the event.
Morgan said during the camp week different workshops will focus on drums, songwriting, self esteem, decision making, hygiene, bullying and conflict resolution. Topics include “Women in Music,” “Self Esteem” and the “Music Business.”
Girlz Rock is an organization for girls by girls and about girls.
Morgan said the week will educate and show girls various facets of the music industry.
She said the camp has two components which are a week-long music camp learning to play an instrument, create an original song and play in a band.
Morgan said the Saturday of the week is dress rehearsal and Sunday is the finals showcase when the bands play in front of a live audience.
The second component is building confidence and empowerment.
