Special Olympics set for May 11

SPECIAL OLYMPICS TO HOST LOCAL EVENT: A Special Olympics competition will be held at 10 a.m. May 11 at Arrowhead Stadium in Girard.

The opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m., and events and awards will take place throughout the day. More than 275 students from eight schools in six surrounding counties will participate. Girard City School District, the Girard-Liberty Rotary Club, and Fairhaven School, and community service groups and businesses will serve as volunteers that day.

ASSOCIATION TO CLEAN DRAINS: The Austin-Starlite Neighborhood Association and Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership is having a “Clean Drains Before the Rains” event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on some of the streets that easily flood because of clogged, trash filled drains and drainage ways. Those who can help are to meet at the corner of Williamsburg and Bennett streets and bring gloves and rakes.

COMMUNITY PICNIC SET: A community picnic will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Southwest Park in Warren with food, games and music. There will be free food and games and music.

TOWNSHIP HOLDS COLLECTION: Newton Township is holding a scrap tire collection from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the grounds of the township administration building. Tires will be accepted from residents and identification is required. No tractor tires or tires with rims will be accepted.

CLEANUP IN THE FALLS: Newton Falls is holding a roadside cleanup on Saturday as part of the annual Cleanup Day. Any interested group, organizations or individuals who want to participate are invited to attend. The city will provide garbage bags, rubber gloves, and safety vests to participants. LIBRARY HOLDS BOOK SALE: The Kinsman Public Library, 6420 Church St., will be hold its annual book sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and during regular hours Monday to May 9.

JUNIOR GARDENERS HELP AT PARK: Volunteers have been helping with the transplanting of annuals and herbs in preparation for the annual Junior Master Gardener Plant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and May 11 in the Packard Park greenhouse.

CHECK HELPS ORGANIZATION: The Home Savings Charitable Foundation this week presented a $2,600 check to the Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past. The funds will sponsor one Youngstown City high school student to participate in Sojourn to the Past, a 10-day trip to the civil rights sites in the South.

COMMISSIONERS TO SPEAK: Trumbull County Commissioner Frank Fuda will be the guest speaker at 9 a.m. today at the Girard Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave. Fuda will provide an update on what is happening in Trumbull County.

BUS TRIPS PLANNED: The Sutliff Museum is planning a May 22 trip to Erie, Pa., as part of the “Entrepreneurs and Elegance: Historic Houses of Erie and East Liverpool” one-day bus tours.

The Anderson bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the parking lot of Walmart on Millennium Drive in Bazetta. Stops include the Erie County Art Museum and the Erie County Historical Society Museum. The bus will return at 6 p.m.
