Scout to complete children’s project in park

HOWLAND Local toddlers will have a play area all their own, as local Girl Scout Mackenzie Polakoff of Troop 598 plans to create a Toddler Park area near Tiger Town at Howland Township Park.

Polakoff, 14, an eighth grader at Lakeview High School, presented her ideas to the Howland Township trustees recently who gave their nod of approval for the project.

A former basketball court area in the northwest section of the park which was taken out near Tiger Town will be used for the toddler area.

Polakoff said areas will be created for playing hopscotch, four-square, and other activities and games geared to young children.

“I plan to use a lot of bright colors which toddlers like. Younger children are attracted to the primary colors,” Polakoff said.

In one section of the area will include information about Girl Scouts.

The area will be 96 by 120 feet and also include a picnic table area for adults and various large shapes that children can play with. There will also be a parking area for tricycles.

Park commissioner Jim LaPolla said he likes the idea of a special activity area for those age 6 and younger.

Work will be done this spring with a target completion date of July 4.

Polakoff, who is doing the project for her Gold Award in scouting, said plans are to have the area enclosed and locked up at night.
