River cleanup set near V&M

FRIENDS GROUP TO HOLD CLEANUP: The Friends of the Mahoning River will team up with the local branch of the Sierra Club for a river cleanup behind V&M Star, 2269 Martin Luther King Blvd., Youngstown, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Those participating are asked to meet at the visitors parking lot on Division Street which is the main entrance for V&M. Gloves and bags will be provided by the Sierra Club. BIRDS OF PREY TO BE SHOWN: The Birds in Flight Sanctuary of Warren, will be presenting a Raptor Education Program at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Eagle Creek Conservation Club, 525 Eagle Creek Road, Leavittsburg. The free event is open to the public. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and seating is limited. This program will give people an understanding of raptors and other wildlife. It also will explain the licenses and training required to run a rehabilitation facility and the environmental issues involved.

FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE PLANNED: Fathers and guardians who have daughters between ages 4 to 12 can attend a semi-formal dance from 6 to 9 p.m. April 20 at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre in Niles. A LOT OF SHAKING GOING ON: The Oh Wow! Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center, Youngstown, will hold “Shake, Shake, Shake Your Own Earthquake” from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. There will be a homemade seismometer to measure force of jumps.

CENTER PLANS FUNDRAISER: World of Fitness The Next Generation, 14 Youngstown Warren Road, Pinetree Plaza, McKinley Heights, will host a Pump ‘n Run 5K Race and Fun Walk on June 2 to help Fairhaven Special Olympics. The fitness opportunity involves benching pressing your body weight before running a 5K race. Each repetition awards 30 seconds off 5K finish time. The bench press is at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K race is at 9:45 a.m. There will be different age divisions for males and females. The center marks its one-year anniversary on Tuesday.

ASSOCIATION TO MEET: The Garfield Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The annual election of officers will take place along with a review of the by-laws and discussion of appropriate social network for the neighborhood to participate in.
