Center dedicates new computer lab

WARREN – The United Methodist Community Center, 760 Main Ave. S.W., has a new computer lab open to help people without access to a computer find employment.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication of the new lab was held recently.

Juanita Pasley, executive director, said instructors will offer training through the Ready Workforce Program for the public and veterans.

“All they have to do is come in, fill out an application, and they can be signed up for the classes and start in the eight-week series of programming,” Pasley said.

She said the lab is available to be utilized by veterans and low-income general community members for training. Pasley said 17 veterans have already gone through the program and have been able to find employment.

Pasley said the center has focused on senior health and wellness, veterans and Ready Workforce development.

”With funding from the Department of Labor we have been able to kick off the program to help the veterans and provide computer instruction. This tests their skill level and interest level and prepare them for training and employment,” she said.

Classes address using a computer, mock interviews, resumes, working with a job coach, and placement.

A $34,000 technology grant from the Nancy Van Fossan Family Foundation through the national United Methodist Women covered costs for 20 computers for the Trumbull location and 20 computers for the Mahoning location.

The computers help with needed training to look for employment and also for veterans needing assistance in obtaining housing.

”We are really excited about what we have been able to do and get for the center,” Pasley said.

She said the money was used to do wiring work at Trumbull County location.

Keion Stella, computer site coordinator, said the goal is to help the veterans and others get used to working on the computer.

Both locations are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. For information, call 330-373-6480 for Warren site or 330-743-5149 for Youngstown site, 139 E. Boardman St.
