TCTC unearths time capsule

CHAMPION – The unearthing of a 25-year old time capsule is just the first of many events planned this year as the Trumbull Career and Technical Center celebrates its 35th anniversary.

Some of the teachers who were at the school in 1988 when the time capsule was buried at the front of the building were among those who help dig it up.

Jason Gray, director of the TCTC, said he was just graduating from high school when the time capsule was buried. Its contents, which included a June 1, 1988, Tribune Chronicle, numerous TCTC program brochures with the TCTC’s original name “Joint Vocational School,” handwritten letters and items by students then and magazine advertisements, will be on display inside TCTC.

“It has been interesting to see how things have changed over the years,” he said.

Gray said the year will allow for the showcasing of the center.

Superintendent Wayne McClain, who will be retiring this spring, said in 35 years since TCTC started there have been more than 10,000 high school and nearly 100,000 adults who have attended classes and taken advantage of the many programs offered to help with future careers and jobs.

Trumbull County Commissioner Paul Heltzel said TCTC programs have helped students attain training for jobs with many students able to stay in the local area.

Warren Mayor Doug Franklin said 35 years ago a group had the foresight to see the value to high school students and adults with a vocational school.

“TCTC has offered 35 years of academic excellence and changed many lives by offering the education to help many reach their goals,” he said.

Vicki Thompson, adult education director, said TCTC worked with many different agencies as an “economic development tool” providing the timely and innovative training to prepare people for work. She said in 1979 the adult education program kicked off.

The center has increased the number of programs and courses offered over 35 years including several that allow students to receive college credit while in high school. Currently, there are 19 districts from Trumbull County whose students attend TCTC with enrollment at just under 1,000 students.
