Red Cross seeks local heroes
NOMINATIONS SOUGHT: The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is currently seeking nominations for its 2013 Acts of Courage hero award recognition. The award recognizes residents who acted courageously and selflessly in a time of emergency.
Nominees must reside or be employed in Mahoning or Trumbull counties, with the heroic event having taken place between April 1, 2012 and April 1, 2013. Nomination forms are available at the Red Cross, 661 Mahoning Ave., Warren, by April 30. For information, call 330-392-2551.
ORGANIZATION HOSTS FUNDRAISER: Project Be Somebody will host a benefit with a Chinese auction and bake sale from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at LaBrae High School in Leavittsburg. All proceeds will benefit the organization’s Project Feed Somebody Community Food Pantry. Those attending are also asked to bring canned goods.
WAFFLE MAKING AT LIBRARY: The Howland Branch Library, 9095 E. Market St., will offer “We’re Making Waffles” for children 5 and older at 11 a.m. Saturday. Children may wear their pajamas. Registration is required by calling 330-856-2011.
READING TO THE CANINES: The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave., will hold “Pups and Pages” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday. Children can gain confidence and improve their reading skills as they read to an uncritical and tail-wagging audience. Children in kindergarten through grade 6 may sign up for 15-minute sessions to read aloud to a registered therapy dog. Call 330399-8807, Ext. 401.
UNITED WAY KICKS OFF EVENT: The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and PNC Bank are teaming up with community partners to kick off tax filing season this Saturday with “Super Saturday.”
Beginning Saturday, the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Sites will be available at the Mahoning-Youngstown Community Action Partnership, 1325 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, and Youngstown State University Williamson College of Business Administration, first floor computer lab.
Super Saturday is the first day that free tax preparation will be offered in the Mahoning Valley. A number of convenient locations throughout the county will be open throughout the tax filing season. For more information on dates and times for the VITA and TCE tax sites, call 2-1-1.
