Champion resident named new director

WARREN – Champion resident Bonnie Wilson has been named the director of Someplace Safe and the Solace Center, both in Warren.

Wilson, who grew up in Niles, took over the domestic violence and supervised visitation agencies on Jan. 1.

She said one of her first events to plan was the Just Desserts fundraiser, held recently at DiVieste’s in Warren.

Wilson previously worked for the parent organization Family and Community Services in Ravenna for two years as the director of business and community relations. She also managed the Portage County Safety Council since 2006.

Wilson said Linda Baer-Bigley, who served as interim director at Someplace Safe, will continue as the advocate manager, and Mary Olesh, who had served as director, will continue her involvement with the Solace Center as program manager.

Wilson is employed by Family and Community Services, which merged with Someplace Safe last year.

Family and Community Services, one of the largest nonprofit organizations in northeast Ohio, operates nearly 60 programs in 11 counties with a budget of $16 million. Locally, Valley Counseling is part of the F&CS organization.

Wilson previously served as the executive director of the American Red Cross of Portage County for five years and served the Trumbull County Red Cross Chapter as health and safety director for nine years.

She also was assistant vice president for Security Dollar Bank, executive director of the Niles Area Chamber of Commerce and program director for the Regional Chamber.

Besides her years of professional experience in the nonprofit sector, she is active in community service and serves on the board of Valley Counseling. She has also served on the Children’s Rehabilitation Board, Warren Trumbull County Urban League and Trumbull County Area AIDS Task Force.
