Volunteers mark day of service

EVENTS PLANNED FOR NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE: There will be a National Day of Service on Saturday to honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Volunteers across the country have organized events with the theme “Our People. Our Future.” Local activities planned include a canned good collection site at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Bruda Center, 235 Highland Ave., with items received to be distributed to local food pantries; reading and working with children at the Learning Express Day Care in Warren and petition circulation for tighter gun control to be sent to Congress. A Chess is Life event, where children learn to play chess, will be held at 10 a.m. at the Eastwood Mall food court. Grace United Methodist Church in Warren will hold a canned food drive. MUSEUM TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE: The Downtown Leavittsburg Improvement Association and Leavittsburg Historical Society will begin holding monthly open houses from 2 to 4 p.m. the third Sunday of each month at the museum, 4901 W. Market St. The museum showcases local historical items and other memorabilia on the community’s history.

WINTER FARM MARKET SET IN HOWLAND: The Howland Farmers’ winter market will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the gazebo, East Market Street. The open air-market will include various produce items. Call 330-856-2340.

VILLAGE SEEKS TO FILL POSITIONS: The West Farmington Village zoning commission is seeking members. The term begins this month. Those interested must be village residents and can contact the mayor.

STUDENTS TAKE PART IN MLK EVENT: The Youngstown State University Penguin Pen Pal program, launched last spring, is connecting 63 Harding Elementary students with student leaders in the YSU University Scholars / Honors programs. Harding third- and fourth-grade students are taking part in a bi-weekly exchange of writings and drawings with YSU students. On Friday, the Penguin Pen Pals and students will meet face-to-face for the first time. Also, student artists from Youngstown City Schools will be featured in the mid-year district art show at the Eastwood Mall Art Gallery through Feb. 4.

ORGANIZATION HELPS FAMILIES: Hubbard Christians in Action recently helped families at the holidays. The food pantry is available from 10 a.m. to noon the fourth Friday of each month at First Baptist Church, Orchard Avenue, Hubbard.
