MLK celebration set for today
DREAM TEAM PRESENTS MLK CELEBRATION: The Trumbull County Martin Luther King Dream Team will hold the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 7 p.m. today at New Jerusalem Fellowship, 1948 Palmyra Road S.W., Warren.
The community is invited to celebrate the legacy of King at the event presented by the youth and young adults of Trumbull County. Guest speaker is Warren native Vincent Peterson II. A concert by the Warren City Wide Youth Choir will follow the program.
A freewill offering will be taken to support the Trumbull MLK Dream Team fund and the 2013 CURRENT scholarship fund.
READING COMBINED WITH ART: Reading and Other Forms of Art will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Butler Museum of Art, East Market Street, Howland. Children will take part in a reading and art activity.
HELPING THE HOMELESS DURING WINTER: Catholic Charities Regional Agency will be collecting sleeping bags, tube socks, winter clothing and used and / or new blankets to hand out to the homeless.
The collection will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday through Feb. 15 at Catholic Charities Regional Agency, 2401 Belmont Ave., Youngstown, and 175 Laird Ave. N.E., Warren.
ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR CHILDREN: OH?WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology, 11 W. Federal St., Youngstown, will hold a “Make It!” activity for children 10 and younger from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Program kits will be available for $2, or children can bring their own 2-liter bottles and styrofoam cups for up-cycling as turn turn them into safety glasses and a sculpture to take home.
A Balloon Blowup will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday for second to seventh grades. Free admission to members with general admission to nonmembers. For information, call 330-744-5914.
CENTER OFFERS SUPPORT GROUP: The Mahoning Valley Hope Center has a new support group, MASTERMINDS. The mental health support group will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. each Friday. Transportation can be arranged.
TAX PREP OFFERED: The Lordstown SCOPE Center, located at the north side of the former career center building on Salt Springs Road, will be offered free tax preparations. Those needing help are asked to call for appointments at 330-824-2173. The service is available 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays by appointment.
CENTER OPENS: The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership was awarded a $75,000 grant from the Ohio Development Services Agency, formerly known as the Ohio Department of Development, for a Minority Business Assistance Center which opened on Tuesday and is housed at the MYCAP office, 1325 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. The center is open weekdays through walk-in or by appointment. Also, evening appointments may be scheduled on an as needed basis.
