Youngstown Developmental Center to close by summer
MINERAL RIDGE — Some 214 people will be out of work this summer when the the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities closes two of its facilities, including the Youngstown Developmental Center on East County Line Road.
The department, in a mass layoff notice to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, said the Montgomery Development Center in Huber Heights also will close June 30.
The notice, issued under the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, states that bumping rights apply to some of the affected employees. The correspondence, dated last Thursday, did not specify the number of people to be impacted at each facility.
In February 2015, the state announced plans to close the two state-run residential centers because of a steep decline — 40 percent in the previous eight years — of the number of people living at the 10 sites in Ohio.
Workers, union leaders and residents’ families lobbied to keep the facilities, but have not been able to convince the state to reconsider.
