Recall issued for 2015 Cruzes built in Lordstown

LORDSTOWN – General Motors is recalling about 2,000 models of the Lordstown-made 2015 Chevrolet Cruze because of parking brake concerns.

The company explained in written statement released Tuesday that some of the vehicles manufactured Feb. 4 to 9 have left rear or right rear parking brake cable brackets that might not have been properly fastened during assembly.

Because of this, the vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requirements, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association reported.

Essentially, the fastening bolts may back out completely, causing the parking brake bracket to separate and the parking brake to not hold the vehicle in place, increasing the risk of the vehicle rolling away and crashing.

GM reported that as of Feb. 11, the company knew of no crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the issue, which was discovered Feb. 9 during a plant audit. The company said the number of potentially affected vehicles is 2,062, of which 1,733 are in the United States and 329 are in Canada.

The recalls are scheduled to start this month. GM said owners will be notified by mail March 24.

Dealers will be inspecting the vehicles for proper torque. If necessary, both the left and right rear park brake cable bracket bolts will be tightened at no cost to the owners.

Cruze owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 800-222-1020 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
