Despite jump, gas prices remain less than year ago

WARREN – Although local gas prices have increased since last week, they still remain significantly cheaper than they were this time last year, AAA reported.

In Warren, the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline on Monday was $2.38, compared to a year ago when the average price was $3.57.

Last week a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Warren area was $2.26.

AAA also reported that the state average for a gallon of regular gas was $2.43 the start of this week. That’s up 10 cents compared to a week ago, but it’s down $1.17 from a year ago.

The national average, which has moved higher for 35 consecutive days, was the same as Ohio’s at $2.43 on Monday, according to AAA. That’s up 13 cents from a week earlier but is about a dollar cheaper than a year ago.

In Youngstown, the area average was $2.40 on Monday, compared to $3.53 a year ago. It was $2.24 a gallon last week.

Gas prices steadily decreased for several months from summer to last month. Some analysts attribute the recent increases to higher crude oil prices and labor strikes at several refineries.
