July jobless numbers ticks upward
WARREN – Area unemployment numbers climbed about a half-point in July to 6.9 percent, from June figures, but still remains 2 percentage points below the 8.9 percent unemployment rate of a year ago.
The 6.9 percent combined Trumbull-Mahoning County rate was released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
Individually, Trumbull County reported 7 percent unemployment, compared to 8.9 percent in July 2013 and 6.5 percent in June.
Mahoning County’s rate was slightly better, at 6.8 percent. It also had registered 8.9 percent a year ago, but 6.2 percent in June.
Municipal unemployment was reported at 8.2 percent for Warren, down 2.2 points from the 10.4 percent reported a year ago. Youngstown’s rate was 9 percent last month, down 2.5 points from the 11.5 percent in July 2013.
Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.7 percent in July 2014, up from 5.5 percent in June 2014. The July unemployment rate for Ohio was down from 7.5 percent in July 2013. The U.S. unemployment rate for July was 6.2 percent, up from 6.1 percent in June, and down from 7.3 percent in July 2013.
