Local jobless number rises
WARREN – Unemployment rates for the Youngstown-Warren area underwent a slight correction in June, to 6.3 percent, after hitting a 7-year low of 5.9 percent in May.
Local jobless numbers were released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The state figures showed that Trumbull County’s jobless rate in June was 6.5 percent, up from May’s 5.9 percent rate, and down considerably from where it stood one year ago, at 8.4 percent.
Mahoning County rates were slightly lower than those of Trumbull County, at 6.2 percent. Mahoning figures were at 5.8 percent in May and 8.6 percent in June 2013.
Municipal numbers reported for June followed the typical trend, coming in higher than county numbers. Warren was listed at 7.3 percent, and Youngstown was listed at 8.1 percent. By comparison, Warren was listed at 6.6 percent in May and 9.4 percent a year ago. Youngstown’s jobless rate for June was 8.1 percent, compared to 7.5 percent in May and 11 percent a year ago.
The number of people unemployed in Trumbull and Mahoning counties in June was 13,200. That number stood at 12,200 in May.
Statewide unemployment figures remained low, at 5.5 percent in June, unchanged from May’s figures. The number of unemployed in Ohio in June was 316,000, down 1,000 from 317,000 in May.
The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 6.1 percent, down from 6.3 percent in May, and down from 7.5 percent in June 2013.
