Events to highlight National Manufacturing Day
The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition and the Industry Partners of Lawrence and Mercer Counties are coordinating a series of open houses throughout the Ohio-Pennsylvania Interstate Region on Friday in conjunction with National Manufacturing Day.
The program at various training and educational institutions is offering open houses and information aimed at people interested in learning more about manufacturing and related career and training opportunities.
National Manufacturing Day is a nationwide effort that gives local companies and training providers a chance to showcase modern manufacturing. By working together, manufacturers and training providers are hoping to address the regional manufacturing skills shortages and help inspire a new generation of manufacturing talent.
Manufacturing provides about 40,000 jobs, or about 11 percent of jobs in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties, Ohio, and Lawrence and Mercer counties, Pennsylvania. It brings about $2.66 billion in earnings to the region. The average experienced manufacturing employee earns $69,454 a year compared to $34,725, the average pay in the region for non-manufacturing employees.
The Mahoning Valley Manufacturing Coalition was formed to provide a network for manufacturers to share ideas and resources to promote development of a skilled workforce, to identify the skills needed and to engage local educators to strengthen courses in those areas.
Among the open houses planned for National Manufacturing Day is one Thursday evening at Youngstown’s National Additives Manufacturing Innovation Institute, or NAMII, a federally funded private-public partnership aimed at experimentation and testing for high-tech manufacturing techniques known as additive manufacturing.
The facility is located at 236 W. Boardman St., Youngstown. Pre-registration is required by logging on to www.namii.org.
