GM Lordstown to idle for week

LORDSTOWN – Despite continued hot sales of the Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze, the company has announced plans to shut down production at the plant for the third week in two months.

Company and union officials have said production at the plant will be idled for one week beginning Aug. 26 to maintain the balance between supply and demand.

This comes after the Cruze in May set an all-time sales record of 32,871 units, and reports of continued high sales numbers in June. The plant ceased production for its annual summer shutdown for two weeks last month as well.

Glenn Johnson, president of United Auto Workers Local 1112 in Lordstown, called the shutdown an “inventory adjustment.”

While he acknowledged the small car’s big sales numbers, Johnson speculated the company may foresee a need to reduce supply as the changeover to the 2014 model year approaches.

“We do it occasionally. The company has gotten real good not overbuilding,” he said.
