Fiddler joins YSO for Irish music program

A founding member of Celtic Woman will join the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra on Saturday for a celebration of Irish music.

Mairead Nesbitt was the fiddler for Celtic Woman from its inception in 2005, and she had the longest tenure in the ensemble, leaving in 2016 to pursue solo projects.

A former all-Ireland fiddle champion and a past member of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, Nesbitt’s career spans Celtic, classical and contemporary music. She was featured on the original soundtrack for “Riverdance” and toured with Michael Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance” and “Feet of Flames” as lead fiddler.

She composed the score for the show “Irish Dance Invasion” and can be heard on the soundtrack of the Disney films “Tinker Bell” and “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure.”

Saturday’s concert won’t be Nesbitt’s first time working with YSO Conductor and Music Director Randall Craig Fleischer.

She appeared in “Rocktopia,” the classical / rock fusion production that Fleischer co-created.

Also on the program Saturday will be students from the Burke School of Irish Dance.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. Saturday at Powers Auditorium, 260 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Tickets range from $20 to $54 and are available at the DeYor Performing Arts Center box office, online at www.youngstownsymp hony.com and by calling 330-744-0264.
