Holiday concerts showcase area talent

Area musicians will be featured in two holiday concerts this weekend at Ford Family Recital Hall.

Howard Howell and the Point Five Band will headline the Joy of Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Friday. The band has a loyal following in the Mahoning Valley and opened for Yo-Yo Ma for his free concert at Warren Community Amphitheatre in August.

They will be joined by Warren native and Youngstown State University graduate Sean Jones, Billy Beck (formerly of the Ohio Players), Herb Wilborn Jr., Clarence Ross and Arielle Green (who sang with the group before the Yo-Yo Ma concert).

The program will feature holiday favorites such as “The Christmas Song,” “Joy to the World” and “White Christmas,” as well as songs by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Donnie Hathaway.

Silver Bells with Mazhorell and Friends at 6:30 p.m. Saturday will feature singer-songwriter Mazhorell Johnson, joined by Kenny Bell, Champion and Coles, Janis Jones, Leanne Binder and Kiera Jones.

The concert is a benefit for the Beatitude House, which provides help for 42 single-parent homes in Mahoning County.

Tickets range from $25 to $50 for the Joy of Christmas and from $25 to $45 for Silver Bells range from $25 to $45. Tickets for both shows are available at the DeYor box office, online at www.youngstownsymphony.com and by calling 330-744-0264.
