PSO plays Westminster concert

Saturday will be the first of two Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra concerts at Westminster College during the 2018-19 school year.

The series opens with “Bernstein in Pittsburgh,” featuring the orchestra under the direction of Manfred Honeck, with guest artist Jennifer Johnson Cano, mezzo soprano.

The concert celebrates the centennial of the birth of American composer Leonard Bernstein and will be filled with pieces Bernstein conducted with the Pittsburgh Symphony early in his career. The program includes works by Beethoven, Haydn and Stravinsky as well as Bernstein’s own First Symphony, which the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra premiered in 1944.

Cano has given more than 100 performances with the Metropolitan Opera and has sung with top orchestras around the world. She has recorded several albums, and her operatic performances have been released on Blu-ray and DVD.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Orr Auditorium, Westminster Drive, New Wilmington, Pa. Tickets range from $40 to $55 and can be ordered by calling 724-946-7354.

The orchestra will return to Westminster College on March 25, 2019, with Honeck and violinist Julian Rachlin.
