‘Addams Family’ opens at YSU

That creepy, kooky “Addams Family” will take up residence at Youngstown State University’s Ford Theater for the next two weekends.

Matthew Mazuroski, chair of the department of theater and dance, directs the musical, which features a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elise and songs by Andrew Lippa.

“The Addams Family” started as a single-panel comic created by cartoonist Charles Addams in the 1930s for The New Yorker. Those comics spawned a television series in the mid-’60s starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones as the madly in love Gomez and Morticia Addams and their creepy family and ancestors.

It led to an animated series, a television movie and two successful theatrical releases, 1991’s “The Addams Family” and 1993’s “Addams Family Values,” featuring Raul Julia and Angelica Huston as Gomez and Morticia.

The musical version made its Broadway debut in 2010 starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. It was shut out at the Tony Awards, but it ran for more than 700 performances in nearly two years in New York.

The plot involved the Addams’ daughter, Wednesday, falling in love and secretly getting engaged, which leads to a dinner with the eccentric Addams’ clan and the fiance’s straight-laced parents.

The cast includes Ben Mowrer, Jessica Hirsh, Nathan Wagner, AnnMarie Lowerre, Angelique Tanner, Aislinn Lowry, Max Stoddard, DJ Davis, Makenzie Moorman, Sam Gregory, Maria Cicco, Michael Callahan, Lexi Denney, Adam Dominick, Elijah DuPonty, Halla Henry, Tristen Kile, Monique Lopez, Vi-Trinh Luu, Daniel Navabi, Ciara Rosario, Destinee Thompson and Haley Tura.

The pit orchestra, conducted by Kent Engelhardt, includes Jordan Grantonic, violin; Maura Gabauer, cello; Santino Almasy / Nadya Stratton, reed 1; Jake Jeges / Morgan Frederick, reed 2; John Ford, trumpet; Brandon Hackimer, trombone; Dan Mihelarakis, guitar / banjo; Anthony Ruggierro, keyboard 1; Jeffery Williams, keyboard 2; Sean Williams, bass; and Joel Gillespie, drums.

“The Addams Family” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 28 at Bliss Hall’s Ford Theater. Tickets are $16 for adults and $8 for non-YSU students, senior citizens, YSU faculty and staff and Penguin Club members. YSU students are admitted free with a valid ID. All seating is general admission.
