B@B returns

Outdoor shows start tonight

Bands at the Baugh (B@B) returns tonight with the first of three outdoor concerts showcasing local acts at the Stambaugh Auditorium Garden.

The concerts, which can accommodate about 250 people, are more intimate performances than the usual events at the auditorium.

“Most of our indoor events are in the concert hall, which is a 2,500-seat venue,” said Jamie Fleeson, director of advertising & design for Stambaugh. “This is much smaller, much more relaxed, especially compared to the opera and all of the YSU (Youngstown State University) events.”

Opening the series this year will be The Vindys and JD Eicher. The Vindys — Jackie Popovec, lead guitar and vocals; John Anthony, guitar and vocals; Rick Deak, guitar and vocals; Ed Davis, drums and vocals; and Scott Boyer — has been growing its audience locally (it performed on the main stage at this year’s Federal Frenzy in downtown Youngstown) and expanding its reach, playing headlining gigs in Cleveland, Akron and Columbus and opening for national acts at the House of Blues and Beachland Ballroom and Tavern.

Eicher, a Canfield native, recently toured Germany and Austria and regularly tours nationwide in addition to playing local shows solo or with his band. Eicher has released four albums, and a vinyl best-of compilation is slated for release on Friday. He also hosts his own music festival, JD’s Summer Songfest, which returns to downtown Youngstown on Aug. 25.

Other concerts in the series will include Howard and the Point Five Band on July 19, and Demos Papadimas and Leo D’Angelo on Aug. 23.

“We wanted to bring back Demos,” Fleeson said. “This is his third year with us. And Howard, we always have a good time with him. He always puts on a really good show.”
