‘9 to 5’ opens season for Straw Hat

ASHTABULA — The Straw Hat Theatre summer season opens Friday with “9 to 5 the Musical.”

Based on the 1980 film, the show sees office coworkers Violet (Tiffany Kiphart), Judy (Ashley Nelling) and Doralee (Hannah Sowry) teaming up to take down their sexist, bigoted boss (Derek Lebzelter) and building an unexpected friendship in the process.

Director Cathy Lawson described the production of the show as timely in light of current events and the response to women’s experiences.

“This story is set during the coming of age of the women’s movement, and I think it’s very timely to be telling it now, while we’re in the midst of the #MeToo movement,” according to Lawson. “Mr. Hart, our villain, does these things that at the time weren’t questioned or challenged, when the norm was still the rigid control of men in the workplace.”

Along the with the title track, which was a hit single when the movie was released, the musical features additional songs penned by Dolly Parton.

“9 to 5” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday through June 23 on the grounds of the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula.
