Group wraps up Western Reserve season

The Dana Brass Quintet will be the final offering in the Music from The Western Reserve’s 2017-18 season.

The quintet is comprised of faculty members from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music.

Stacie Mickens serves as principal horn for both the Wheeling and Youngstown symphony orchestras as well as fourth horn for the Akron Symphony. In addition to her orchestral performance experience, Mickens has performed in numerous drum and bugle corps activities, including the Star of Indiana’s Brass Theater, the Cadets of Bergen County and the Indianapolis Colts.

Christopher Krummel, trumpet, is an active military duty musician, a solo musician, a commercial musician and a performer with numerous orchestras. He also has worked with such acts as Michael Bolton, The Temptations and the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Nicholas Samson, trumpet, is in his final semester of graduate studies at YSU and holds positions with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra. As a member of the Youngstown Saxon Band, he has performed throughout Europe. As a commercial musician, he has performed with entertainers such as O’Jays, The Tokens, Peter Tork, Martha Reeves, Sam Moore and Jay Harmon.

Hakeem Bilal, bass trombone, holds positions in numerous ensembles, including C Street Brass, River City Brass and Beauty Slap. He regularly substitutes for the Cleveland Orchestra and Pittsburgh Symphony. He recently performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur.

Brian Kiser holds the position of principal tuba of the Roanoke (Va.) Symphony and has performed in numerous other ensembles, including the Pittsburgh Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Youngstown Symphony, Canton Symphony, Warren Philharmonic, New Mexico Philharmonic and the Malaysian Philharmonic orchestras. He also is solo tubist with the Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band.

Sunday’s concert will include works by G. F. Handel, Michael Tilson Thomas, Camille Saint-Saens, J.S. Bach, Johann Strauss and Billy Joel.

The concert starts at 5 p.m. Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church, 21 Aurora St., Hudson. A meet-the-artists reception will follow the concert. Tickets are $20 for adults and free for students. For tickets or more information, call 330-840-8429 or go to www.mftwr.org.
