Photo 2018 opens at TAG
The work of area photographers will be featured in a juried exhibition opening Saturday at Trumbull Art Gallery.
Seventy-five artists submitted nearly 190 pieces for consideration. Juror Sarah Bokone, a professional photographer and owner of Boko Photo, selected 77 pieces by 55 artists for the show.
“I was impressed by how many people submitted,” Bokone said. “There was a pretty good variety.”
Looking over the selected pieces on Tuesday, Bokone said she was struck by the number of landscapes and wooded scenes she chose.
“I personally seem to be drawn to a lot of trees,” she said. “I’ve always been a sucker for trees. I used to photograph them a lot when I first started.”
Bokone, who has had solo shows at TAG and downtown Warren’s Shortcut Gallery, primarily does portrait work in her professional career and was surprised there wasn’t more portraiture submitted.
“I tried not to focus too much on technique and more on if it spoke to me,” she said. “I’m a sucker for storytelling and emotion and stuff like that, and I really look for that in the work … anything that makes me want to look at it for more than 30 seconds.”
Four works were selected for juror awards and the photographers each will receive $175. The winners will be announced during the opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
An additional 76 works by 47 artists not selected for “Photo 2018” will be will be displayed at the Nissen Gallery at Trumbull Regional Medical Center through April 28.
