Harding students perform at Stambaugh for Dana concert

Students from Warren G. Harding High School will join Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music faculty and ensembles for a concert Friday at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Visiting students from Harding and Hudson high schools will participate in master classes with Dana instrumental music professors throughout the day, culminating with a concert featuring the two guest high school bands along with the YSU Percussion Ensemble, directed by Glenn Schaft, and the YSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Stephen L. Gage, YSU director of bands and orchestra.

The Harding band program features approximately 170 students in a variety of ensembles. The 165-member Raider Marching Band performs at all home and away football games, multiple parades and other events. The music program is led by Reid Young and Heather Sirney, and the staff also includes Kevin Kifer and student teacher Rebecca Shelton.

The YSU Percussion Ensemble will open Friday’s concert with music by Michael Burritt.

YSU Wind Ensemble will play Arturo Marquez’s Danzon No. 2 and Richard Wagner’s “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” from “Lohengrin” as well as two works by David Morgan, professor of composition, double bass and jazz studies.

Morgan’s “When Penguins Fly,” which premiered last month at the 2018 Ohio Music Educators Association Convention, will feature soloist Stacie Mickens, a professor of horn. His “Reactions” will feature soloist Glenn Schaft, a professor of percussion, and the work was written by Morgan specifically for Schaft.

The concert will close with the combined Harding Symphonic Band seniors, Hudson Wind Symphony seniors and YSU Wind Ensemble section leaders performing John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

The concert starts at 7 p.m. Friday at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Tickets are $7 for adults and $6 for senior citizens and non-YSU students. YSU students are admitted free with a valid ID. Tickets can be purchased online at www.stambaughauditorium.com and will be available at the door.
