Playhouse offers theater classes for children
Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre will offer four theater classes as part of its winter session, which starts Jan. 20.
Silly Saturdays is a new class created for children in preschool and kindergarten. The class, which meets from 9 to 9:45 a.m., will concentrate on creative movement, games and exercises to allow even the youngest “would-be performers” to develop their physical skills and imagination
Imagination Station, for children in grades 1 to 3, is a creative drama class that will include theater games, stage skills and creative movement, while working to develop imagination, self-confidence and self-expression. It meets from 10 to 11 a.m. The class meets from 10 to 11 a.m.
It Was a Dark and Stormy Night, for children in grades 4 to 6, teaches the basics of acting, through the use of classic theater games and improvisational exercises. Students will then use those skills in the creation, rehearsal and performance of their own mystery story. The class meets from 10 to 11 a.m.
So You Want to Be an Actor is designed for students is grades 7 to 12 and will cover stage skills, auditioning techniques, beginning improvisation and scene work. It meets from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and is aimed at both the beginning actor and those with some experience.
Classes run for six Saturdays through Feb. 24 at the Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane, Youngstown, and will have a work sharing performance on the last day for families and friends.
The cost is $75 per student with discounts available for siblings. Some scholarship assistance is available for qualifying students. Enrollment is limited.
