Hopewell Theater opens ‘Over the Woods’ Friday

YOUNGSTOWN — The comedy “Over the River and Through the Woods” opens Friday for a two-weekend run at the Hopewell Theatre.

Joe DiPietro’s play tells the story of a young man in New Jersey who spends his Sundays with his Italian grandparents. When he announces his employer is transferring him to Seattle, the family tries everything from guilt to matchmaking to get him to stay.

Hunter Thomas plays the grandson, Nick, and his grandparents are played by Terry Shears, JoAnne Santagata, Tom O’Donnell and Cher L. Halas. Morgan LaCamera is the potential love interest in the production directed by Pat Vidis.

According to Shears, “This is the show for everybody who comes from Italy, knows someone who comes from Italy, or wishes they came from Italy. Accordions, lasagna, and a close, loving family, so close it’s like the tie that binds — and gags.”

“Over the River and Through the Woods” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Jan. 27 and 2 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Hopewell Theatre, 702 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. Tickets are $13 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens and can be reserved by calling 330-746-5455.
