YSU Jazz Ensemble honors Meshel for first concert of the season

Youngstown State University Jazz Ensembles will pay tribute to former state Sen. Harry Meshel at their first concert of the 2017-18 school year.

The two ensembles are directed by Kent Engelhardt and Dave Kana. Engelhardt’s ensemble will honor Meshel, who died last month at age 93, with a performance of Dizzy Gillespie’s “Things to Come.”

According to Engelhardt, “Senator Meshel was an ardent and generous supporter of the YSU Jazz Area for many years.”

Engelhardt’s group also will celebrate the centennials of Thelonious Monk and Buddy Rich, performing “Ya Gotta Try” and “Basically Blues” from the Buddy Rich Band and Thelonious Monk’s “Ruby, My Dear” and “Evidence.”

The ensemble led by Kana will perform music by Manny Albam, Ernie Wilkins and Gordon Goodwin.

The concert starts at 730 p.m. Monday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center. Admission is free. For more information, call 330-941-2307.
