‘Wonka’ musical opens Friday
The musical “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” opens Friday at Trinity Fellowship Church in Boardman.
The stage version is based on Roald Dahl’s novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and its 1971 film adaptation, and it is staged by the Oakland Center for the Arts and its Kids First Theater Initiative.
“I was looking for things that people really haven’t done around here in a while, and this was one of the biggest things I thought of and one that would work with our kids,” director Brendan Byers said.
The cast of more than 50 children and adults features WFMJ-TV personality Jennifer Brindisi as Mike Teavee’s mom Mrs. Teavee, Alex Sanders as Willy Wonka, Joe Malys as Grandpa Joe and Donna Downie as Mrs. Gloop.
Jake Platt will play Charlie Bucket with his father, A.J. Platt, playing Charlie’s father and his grandfather, Fred Mayhew, playing Charlie’s Grandpa George.
Anthony Coot Madison is the stage manager and Pat McCreery is production manager.
“Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Aug. 11 and 12 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Fellowship Church, 4749 South Ave., Boardman.
