‘Wonderettes’ closes Straw Hat season

The musical “The Marvelous Wonderettes” will conclude the Straw Hat Theatre summer season.

The show, created by Roger Dean, is set at Springfield High School gymnasium in 1958 and ’68. In 1958, the Wonderettes are high school friends looking forward to performing at their senior prom. A decade later, the women are at their high school reunion and reflecting on the highs and heartbreaks they’ve experienced since graduating 10 years earlier.

The show features a full lineup of classic pop, rock and Motown songs, including “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” “You Don’t Own Me,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Secret Love,” “Mr. Sandman,” “Leader of the Pack” and “Heat Wave.”

Stephen Rhodes directs the Straw Hat production, and the cast features Sarah Altonen, Libby Kendzerski, Tiffani Murphy and Hannah Sowry.

“The Marvelous Wonderettes” will be staged 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Aug. 11 to 13 and 18 and 19 on the grounds of the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for students, senior citizens and the military and 11 for children ages 2 to 12 if purchased in advance by calling 440-964-3396 or visiting ashtabulaartscenter.org. Tickets purchased the night of the performance are $2 more.
