Slavic culture celebrated
Simply Slavic, the downtown festival created specifically to celebrate Mahoning Valley’s Slavic community, returns Saturday to downtown Youngstown.
The event will showcase the rich traditions of the Slavic culture by celebrating the food, music, dance and customs of the various ethnicities represented here.
A Slavic kitchen will offer homemade foods from more than a half dozen area churches, businesses and ethnic groups. A baking contest will give folks a chance to submit their own Slavic baked goods for judging.
The Wasko Entertainment Stage will feature performance throughout the day by the Del Sinchak Orchestra, Lucina Slovak Folklore Ensemble, Happy Hearts Junior Tamburitzans, Slavjane Folk Ensemble, Syrena / Gorale Polish Folk Dancers, Kyiv Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, Harmonia Folk Ensemble, Mikey Dee Polka Stars, Harmonia Folk Ensemble and the Mikey Dee Polka Band.
Nocne Sove Tamburitzans and The Zaps will perform near the Slavic Heritage Center and inside the dining tent.
The event will conclude with accordion, concertina and violin dance music with member of Harmonia and friends around a bonfire from 11 p.m. to midnight.
Simply Slavic runs from noon to midnight on East Federal Street, Youngstown. Admission is $4 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. For more information, call 330-646-4082.
