Summer concert news warms winter chill

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

l There’s a chill in the air this week but also some reasons to look forward to next summer.

Both Blossom Music Center and the KeyBank Pavilion (the venue formerly known as First Niagara Pavilion and Post-Gazette Pavilion and the venue that always will be called Star Lake by anyone who isn’t getting paid to called it something else) announced Dead & Company concerts for 2017.

On Tuesday LaureLive announced the lineup for its second music festival on the campus of the Laurel School in Russell Township, and it’s a good one.

Gary Clark Jr. headlines on June 10 as part of a bill that also includes NEEDTOBREATHE, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Blue October, The Revivalists, JOHHNYSWIM, The Mowgli’s, Kate Voegele, Arkells, Cobi, The Unlikely Candidates, Austin Plaine, The Blue Stones, Shivering Timbers, Step Rockets, Harbor & Home and Liv Cargile.

The Head and the Heart is June 11 headliner and will be joined by Young The Giant, Michael Franti & Spearhead (one of the only returning acts from the inaugural fest), The Strumbellas, Dawes, Timeflies, Wrabel, Lunchmoney Lewis, Knox Hamilton, Magic Giant, Muddy Magnolias, SamFox and Marina Strah.

Last year’s festival was wonderful. The setting is beautiful, and it has more of a family-friendly vibe than many music festivals (perhaps because of the school setting and the fact that Laurel School students were involved in different aspects of the event).

Single day tickets are $60 for adults and $25 for children ages 3 to 10, and weekend passes are $105 for adults and $40 for children at www.laurelive.com. VIP options also are available.

l An Ohio music festival with a much longer history also announced its plans for next summer, including a new name.

Jamboree in the Hills in Belmont will be known as Jambo Country for its 41st edition from July 13 to 15. It traditionally draws more than 100,000 country music fans over three days.

So far, only the headliners have been announced — Thomas Rhett on July 13, Jason Aldean on July 14 and Lady Antebellum on July 15.

A one-day sale is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 15 with three-day passes available for $175 at www.jambocountry.com and by calling 800-594-TIXX.

l The Columbus hard rock music fest Rock on the Range also announced its 2017 lineup, which is led by Metallica.

The fest also will feature Soundgarden, Korn, The Offspring, Volbeat, Primus, Bush, Chevelle, Papa Roach, Seether, Coheed & Cambria and nearly 50 other bands from May 19 to 21 at MAPFRE Stadium.

Rock on the Range traditionally sells out weeks in advance, and this year tickets might be gone even faster. Weekend GA passes for the field already are sold out. VIP tickets also appear to be gone. Weekend stadium GA passes are $169.50 and are available at rockontherange.com

l The Nelsonville Music Festival (June 1 to 4) promises its 2017 lineup early next year, and Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati (June 2 to 4) simply says “check back soon” on its website for the 2017 lineup. However, both fests currently have tickets on sale for those willing to take a chance without knowing the acts.

l For those looking for holiday gifts with a local flavor, Eric Murphy’s documentary “Traficant: The Congressman of Crimetown” now is available on DVD.

The 90-minute documentary chronicles the career of  James A. Traficant Jr. from populist sheriff who refused to carry out foreclosure notices against unemployed steelworkers to congressman who was convicted of taking bribes. The DVD includes several bonus features, including a short on political cartoonist Rick Muccio, whose work appears in the Tribune Chronicle and also can be seen in the film.

The DVD is $15 online at www.traficant-movie.com and can be purchased locally at Record Connection in McKinley Heights and Barnes & Noble in Boardman.
