DNA Gallery display of ceramics opens Saturday
An exhibition by ceramic artist Andy Thomas opens Saturday at DNA Studios Gallery.
“Naked Clay” features pottery both large and small, both figurative and functional. Thomas draws inspiration from the sculpted forms of body builders and uses a mix of techniques to achieve the finished product. All of the pieces are “naked” — without finishes — and Thomas uses a variety of clays to create the different tonal ranges. He develops the appearance of shadows and movement with diverse firing techniques adding to the lifelike quality his pots have.
Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree in three dimensional design from Youngstown State University in 2014 and his master’s degree from Kent State University this year. He has shown both locally and nationally, including the 2015 Fired in Freedom exhibition in Pittsburgh and the 2015 Off the Table show at the MWSU Clay Guild in Missouri.
“Naked Clay: Pottery by Andy Thomas” will be on display through Jan. 3 at DNA, 137 S. Park Ave., Warren. An opening reception is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Gallery hours are noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For information, call 330-980-8794.
